Jane has been interested in Japanese textiles and crafts for well over twenty years, developing a speciality in the craft of sashiko stitching and design. Initially drawn to the quality and detail in the workmanship of Japanese textiles, Jane now teaches extensively and is renowned as a patient teacher who is diligent in providing an enjoyable learning environment for all levels and abilities.
Jane will take you through all the skills required to make the Gabi Bag including her boro inspired stitching technique where you will enjoy starting a set of three boro inspired coasters.
The workshop will cover the following skills:
- Hitomezashi sashiko stitching
- Using a grid to stitch hitomezashi patterns
- Transferring sashiko patterns to fabric
- Jane's boro inspired technique
Jane likes to inspire students with original ideas and techniques in the gentle craft of sashiko, branching into other forms of sashiko including one stitch sashiko, boho-inspired deisgns and kogin stitching. The sashiko stitch was originally used to mend and reinforce cloth but has evolved into a decorative stitching technique throughout Japan, growing into different styles. Sashiko has become popular because of its elegant, bold and meditative quality, versatility and how easy it is to learn.
Jane will cover many sashiko techniques including hitomezashi patterns, share facts on their origins and take you through the methods of transferring sashiko patterns to fabrics. You will also learn how to choose appropriate fabrics and tools for traditional sashiko techniques. Jane will also explain how to achieve the 'grain of rice' stitches - a term derived from what was once an official order that stitches on Japanese farmers clothing should be no longer than a grain rice and no wider than a piece of straw!
Morning, afternoon tea and lunch are included on both days. Please include a message at checkout if you have any dietary requirements.
