  • Solid Colours

Fabrics of solid colour are an important element to any fabric collection. Our solid coloured fabrics include tsumugi, azumino-momen, yarn-dyed and sarashi muslin. Tsumugi fabrics are yarn-dyed shot-cottons with the warp thread one colour and the weft thread always black. This method of production gives an almost luminous effect to the fabric and a subtle texture giving them versatile functionality as garments, in quilts or bags. Azumino-momen fabrics are piece-dyed in the Azumino district of Japan (momen means cotton) hence the name Azumino-momen. Before they are placed in a small pot for dying the fabrics go through a process to create a natural wrinkle finish. This gives the fabric a distinctive feel which stays in the fabric even after washing. Azumino-momen is ideal for sashiko, embroidery, garments, quilts, soft-furnishings and bags. There is an unpatterned yarn-dyed sakizome momen fabric which has an ecru base thread and features a sedate colour range. Sarashi muslin is a very fine weight fabric with a soft feel and is perfect for sashiko.

  • Florals

Fabrics from our floral range are perfect for garments and quilting. Fabrics in this range include sarasa, jacquard and linen-cotton fabrics from Kobayashi. Olympus Thread have released a series of floral fabrics called Sarasa which was a popular printed fabric imported to Japan in the early Edo Period. Japanese master printers adapted their skills to make their own version of sarasa. These fabrics are produced by combining traditional Japanese weaving and dyeing methods with today’s advanced technology. We also have jacquard fabrics which have a luxurious feel, the perfect choice to use for garments. They are double layered fabrics that are just as beautiful on the reverse side.

  • Dots

The dot fabrics in our range include yarn-dyed sakizome cotton fabrics as well as takumi printed fabrics. The solid coloured backgrounds of takumi fabrics are made using a special grey fabric which is mostly dyed by hand and then the dots are printed onto the fabric.

  • Sashiko, Kogin and...

Our ever popular pre-stencilled sashiko fabrics from Olympus Thread are made of exceptional quality cotton and make sashiko simpler. No need to mark your fabric as the design is printed directly on the fabric, ready for use. Once you have done your stitching, simply place the cloth in warm water and the lines will disappear. Pre-stencilled sashiko fabric is available on the bolt and pre-cut panels. Similarly we have excellent Olympus Thread base cloths for sashiko, kogin and embroidery both on the bolt and in pre-cut packs.

  • Stripes

Our striped fabric range includes both printed and woven stripes of various widths. Our printed stripes include fabrics from the takumi series, which are of exceptional quality. The solid coloured backgrounds are made using a special grey fabric which is mostly dyed by hand and then printed. The woven stripe fabrics are available in both regular width and kimono-width fabrics. We have wonderfully colour-rich fabrics from Olympus Threads in either thick or thin stripes. Our range of Nukumori Shima Tsumugi stripes are of exceptional quality and are still woven on wooden looms in Hamamatsu, Japan.

  • Printed

Our range of printed fabrics include both traditional and contemporary designs, in a range of colours and weights. We have takumi fabrics from Olympus Thread which feature traditional mon (family crest) designs, auspicious Japanese motifs and kimono panels which are popular to make as wallhangings for the home. The restrained colour palette of the takumi range coupled with their unique patterns make them perfectly suited for making elegant garments with a distinctive feel. Similarly, printed fabrics from the Kobayashi range are wonderful to wear. There are fabrics within this range which pop with colour and also include fabrics which are a linen-cotton blend to lend a different feel and weight to your garment.
