Plain fabrics for sashiko

Discover our range of plain coloured fabrics for sashiko, including tsumugi, azumino-momen and sarashi muslin. These fabric ranges offer a variance in weights, widths and textures, offering greater adaptability to your latest sashiko project.  Sarashi muslin is a sheer, light-weight fabric as featured in the Olympus Thread sashiko sampler range whereas tsumugi and azumino-momen fabrics offer more structure, perfect for bag or clothing projects.

  • Azumino-momen

Azumino-momen fabrics are piece-dyed in the azumino district of Japan (momen means cotton). Before they are placed in a small pot for dying the fabrics go through a process to create a natural wrinkle finish. Azumino-momen is ideal for sashiko, embroidery, garments, quilts and bags.

  • Sarashi muslin

Sarashi muslin is a soft, lightweight muslin made from 100% cotton. It is the same fabric that our sashiko samplers (hana fukin) are printed on, so it is perfect for backing hana fukin or making your own.

  • Tsumugi

Japanese tsumugi cotton fabrics are of exceptional quality and their distinctive yet subtle textures give them versatile function. Tsumugi are yarn-dyed shot cotton, with the warp thread one colour and the weft thread always black. They are perfect for sashiko stitching and for making clothes, bags, tablerunners and quilts.

  • Base cloth for sashiko

Olympus Sashiko Fabric is a superior quality cotton available in a range of 3 colours. The colours available are off-white, blue & navy. Sashiko work adds an unique decorative finish to many craft projects including cushions, bags, quilts & garments.
