Join us March 13-14, 2025 in Arc-et-Senans for a two-day workshop to make the magnificent Gabi Bag designed by Jane MacDonald. We'll show you all the techniques required to make the Gabi Bag. The project is great fun and covers a variety of different techniques, and can also easily be turned into a wall decoration if you prefer. Jane has been interested in Japanese textiles and crafts for over twenty years, developing a specialty in the craft of sashiko sewing and design. Initially drawn to the quality and detail of Japanese textile making, Jane now teaches extensively and is renowned for being a patient teacher, keen to provide an enjoyable learning environment for all levels and abilities.
Jane will take you through all the skills required to make the Gabi bag, including her boro inspired sewing technique where you'll enjoy starting a set of three boro inspired coasters.
The workshop will cover the following skills:
- Hitomezashi sashiko stitching
- Using a grid to sew hitomezashi motifs
- Transferring sashiko patterns onto fabric
- Jane's boro inspired technique
Jane loves to inspire students with original ideas and techniques in the delicate craft of sashiko, dabbling in other forms of sashiko, including single-stitch sashiko (hitomezashi), boro inspired designs and kogin sewing. Sashiko stitch was originally used to repair and strengthen fabrics, but evolved into a decorative sewing technique throughout Japan, morphing into different styles. Sashiko has become popular because of its elegant, bold and meditative quality, its versatility and its ease of learning.
Jane will cover many sashiko techniques, including hitomezashi patterns, share facts about their origins and explain methods for transferring sashiko patterns onto fabrics. You'll also learn how to choose the right fabrics and tools for traditional sashiko techniques. Jane will also explain how to make "grain of rice" stitches - a term derived from what was once an official order that stitches on Japanese farmers' clothing should be no longer than a grain of rice and no wider than a piece of straw!
Price :
The price of the two-day workshop is 240€. This includes the workshop kit, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch are included on both days. Please include a message at checkout if you have any dietary requirements.
