Textile tour of Japan 2024

This textile trip to Japan focused on traditional crafts and offered the chance to try out different techniques with masters of sashiko, temari, stenciling indigo dyeing, washi paper and Kurume kasuri. The trip took in famous sites, towns, villages and textile establishments on the main island of Honshu and the southwest island of Kyushu.

Temari workshop in Tokyo with Enneste and the charming Naho team! Making Temari is used, among other things, to relax and have fun with friends. It may seem difficult, but it is a wonderful experience!

  • Akie Ginza Sashiko Museum Tour
  • Visit to the Kubota kimono collection at the Itchiku Kubota Museum

           

The kimonos exhibited at the Ichiku Kubota Art Museum are Tsunihagana masterpieces representing the seasons, nature and the cosmos.

  • Participation in a stencil dyeing workshop with textile designer Yumi Ishikita

       

A lovely afternoon spent with Yumi Ishikita, who shared with us her passion for textile design. Thanks to her, we discovered some of the secrets of Katazome printing.

  • Learn traditional sashiko techniques from a talented teacher in Kyoto

       

Sashiko workshop in Kyoto, led by Kazue Yoshiwaka. We embroidered a Sashiko coaster with the kugurizashi method, finished very neatly.

  • Visit the spectacular Kinkakuji and Ryoanji temples in Kyoto
  • Participation in a roketsu (indigo) dyeing workshop
  • Learn to paint fabric for Yuzen dyeing
  • Visiting rare Kyoto stores, such as the hard-to-find “Needle Shop”
  • Participation in a one-day aizome workshop and discovery of Kurume kasuri

       

Amazing day at Kurume Yama-Ai Kusuri studio. This artistic craft requires a very broad range of know-how, an artistic spirit and a lot of dedication.

  • Visit to the Shimogawa weaving workshop
  • Learn to make handmade paper in a washi workshop

   

We saw a demonstration of washi paper making by a master maker.

 

  • Visit to a Yame green tea plantation

   

Visit a tea plantation and taste local teas.
